Post 26: The Proper and Improper Way for Online Students To Use Literature Guides

The Proper way to use Literature Guides like Spark Notes by Yvonne Ho

1. Use Spark Notes to read through the summary of a book or story to get an idea of what is going on in the story.
2. Read the plot summary to get a visual map in your head of what is going on in the book so that when you read the original book, the plot of the book will not seem so hard since you already have a visual map of the plot from reading Spark Notes.
3. Pick out the themes from Spark Notes and notice these themes as you read the original book. For example, take notes of some general themes while reading Spark Notes.  Then underline direct quotes from your original book that reflect these themes.
4. Use Spark Notes as a launching pad for your understanding of the literature you were assigned to read.

The Improper way to use Literature Guides like Spark Notes

1. Do not just read the Spark Notes summary. You also need to read the original book to get the full value of the assigned literature.
2. Do not copy and paste ideas from Spark Notes into your paper. You need to use your own ideas and opinions in your literature paper.  Use peer reviewed articles and scholarly articles for your paper.
3. Do not use Spark Notes as a source for your Academic paper as Spark Notes is considered a cheat site in anti-plagiarism programs such as Turnitin or Plagiarism Detector.
4. Do not rely on Spark Notes or any other Literature guide as your sole source of information about your assigned reading.
