How to be a caring online teacher
Now this post is
more or less a repeat of an earlier post, but being caring and
compassionate are such important traits for a teacher to have that it
bears repeating.
Here is my repeat post:
1. Show you care.
2. Send 'How are you doing' emails to see how students are doing.
3. Treat each student special.
4. Take an interest in their hobbies, and tailor your lesson to the interests of that class.
5. Create multimedia just for that student.
6. Grade quickly and on time.
7. Give feedback on how students can make improvements.
8. Maintain classroom presence--I will talk more about the three kinds of online presence in a future post.
9. Maintain fun forum discussions--I will talk about how to have fun forums in a future post.
10. Be flexible--Also I will talk about how to be flexible in a future post.
11.
Turn in your final grades on time. Students cannot enroll in their next
classes until you turn in their final grades so don't hold up a
student's progress by being late with final grades.
12.
Redesign assignments to make your forums more interesting. Your forums,
assignments, and lectures need to match in terms of teaching
objectives--I will talk more about how to create teaching objectives
that align in a future post.
13. Hold regular office
hours so students know you care enough to see them in real time or one
on one so that you are not just a name in the online classroom.
14. Listen to students and treat students with respect.
15.
Answer student email in a positive and professional tone. Never send a
negative, angry or condescending email. I will talk more about tone in a
future post.
This is the general outline in how to be a
caring teacher. Are you a caring online teacher? Are there other tips I
missed? You can leave them in the comments!
