The Sandwich Method
Now that you are past the midway point of your online class, you have been busy grading papers and forum responses. I will be making a number of posts on how to give good feedback. In this post, I will focus on the Sandwich Method.
A. Say something positive about the student's work. "Gee, John, you made a great thesis statement. Your paper has solid structure.
B. Tell students 2 or 3 things they need to improve. "However, John, you need to put a comma after a dependent clause. Your topic sentences need to match your thesis statement. You are missing a conclusion paragraph.
C. Then, end the feedback with something positive "Overall, I am proud of the progress you have made in this class. You have just about nailed the 5 paragraph essay structure! Good job!"
So, as you see, I sandwich the negative (bad news) or room for improvement tips in the middle of my feedback while putting positive statements in the first and last sentences. When I was teaching Business Writing, the Business textbook suggests using the Sandwich Method also for giving bad news in business.
How many of you use The Sandwich Method? Do you have other tips on how you give feedback to students?
