Post 3: In my Online Teaching Series: How to Create a Welcome Email
To set a positive tone for your upcoming online class, what better than to send a welcome email before the start of class. When you send a welcoming email to welcome students to the class, students get the impression that you are an enthusiastic teacher who has a burning passion to teach that subject and students get a positive first impression of you. Every month before my monthly class starts, I would send a welcome email to welcome students to the class, to calm the nerves of anxious students, to reassure the non-traditional Adult students that I am there to support them and to focus all students' attention to what they have to look forward to in the upcoming class.
Your Welcome Email could contain the following:
1. Give a fun preview of the class.
2. Tell a funny anecdote about when you were a student and had nerves about taking a class to humanize the teacher.
3. Reiterate parts of your Welcome Introductory Video (Reuse parts of your Welcome Introductory Video Transcript)--See previous post on a Sample Welcome Introductory Video transcript
4. Include your teacher contact information so that students know where to ask questions.
5. Use a calm, professional, caring, inviting tone to get students to be comfortable asking you questions and to invite them to dialogue.
6. Include two main things students should focus on for your class.
7. Tell students your office hours
