Post 16: Yvonne Online tips: What kind of feedback do students want?

What kind of feedback does a student want when they get back their paper?

1. Don't correct every single mistake. This way you can grade faster so students can get their comments sooner before the next assignment.

2. Correct more for structure and content than for punctuation or grammar this will speed up your grading process. Usually, during the first round of essays, I grade for structure. I want to make sure students have mastered the 5 paragraph essay structure. Then, during the second round of essays, I grade for punctuation. Grading for one specific area at a time saves time for grading.

3. Give students no more than three areas for improvement otherwise the students will get overwhelmed. The human brain can only taken three items at a time. This is the reason why I focus first on content and structure and I give students three areas of improvement for content structure in the first round of essays and then I give students read areas of improvement for grammar and mechanics essays so that students know what to focus on and so students can learn better and faster.

When I taught English composition, I would work on teaching us a structure first so typical mistake would be place your thesis statement in the last sentence of the first paragraph. Or your topic sentences need to match your thesis statement. When I corrected the second essay then I would find three grammar errors such as put a comma before a coordinating conjunction.

Giving students feedback on their papers is important because students need feedback and they need to know what they did wrong so that they can improve their grade later on. Students do not like to just get a paper just with a bad grade or a grade and not know what they did wrong so that they could do better next time. We are all humans and humans all want interaction. The students want to interact with you by getting thorough feedback on their papers so that they can improve their writing and that's the reason why they're taking a writing course.
