Post 391: Tips For Job Success
I learned these lessons the hard way. Always show up for work. In 12 years at AMU, I only missed one day of work and that was for my checkup. I became a very reliable worker and my bosses learned to trust me.
I learned to be concise so that there is no room for misunderstanding of the messaging. If a boss misunderstands, and you try to correct him, some bosses think you are undermining their authority and will think you are correcting them or telling them how to do their job. Be concise.
When you message a boss about anything, be positive. Do not tell the boss your problems and what went wrong with the project because then the boss will think you do not know what you are doing, and you are expecting the boss to solve your problems. Just keep it short, positive, and focus on what you will do to fix the situation. That's it. Stick to problem solving mode and you will be just fine.
When you problem solve for the boss, you show how intelligent and indispensable you are to the company. Always have your boss see you in a positive professional light.
Don't complain if you get a bad review. The bosses have the right to be as harsh as they want because they are the boss. You just have to take it and be stoic. You tell the boss you will make whatever fixes he/she wants you to make. Whatever you do, don't get defensive. Don't try to defend your way of doing something because the boss is not interested in your way. He wants it done HIS way. I learned these lessons the hard way.
It is always important to make your boss feel important no matter his age, her looks, or whatever personality traits you like or do not like about him. You are at work to do the job, not judge the boss. He is there to be your boss and that's it. As long as you do not get your ego into it and just take it, you will do fine at the job.
It is okay to ask for clarification to make sure you are doing what the boss wants done. Otherwise, keep a positive attitude and all will be good.
