Post 369: How can Content Area Faculty Teach Writing To Their Students?

How To Integrate Writing Into the Curriculum

1. While teaching the content, plant fertile ideas of what to write in their journal a week or two in advance.  Ask students what they already know about the topic and what they want to know about the subject. (Fulwiler, 27-32)

2. Give student time in class to write their journal. Have them write one page a week about what they had learned. (Fulwiler, 27-32)

3. When students write papers, have students look at each other's draft copies and comment on them.

4. Use Peer Groups for students to motivate each other. (Fulwiler, 27-32)

5. Model good writing to students. This can be done by going over a scholarly article or other piece of good writing in your field. (Fulwiler, 27-32)

6. Have students write short papers to a variety of audiences. (Fulwiler, 27-32)

7. Give clear instructions and also give clear feedback. (Fulwiler, 27-32)

8. Write an assignment in class and show students how you think through writing that assignment or paper. (Metacognition)

How To Give Writing Feedback

1. Be Positive (Fulwiler, 27-32)

2. Respond to Content first (Revision), then mechanics (Proofreading). (Fulwiler, 27-32)

3. Comment on no more than 3 errors at a time so as not to overwhelm the student. (Fulwiler, 27-32)

4.Be specific when you comment on problems. (Fulwiler, 27-32)

5 Make students understand that good writing depends on audience and purpose. (Fulwiler, 27-32)
