Post 180: The Single Story and Stereotypes TED Talk by Chinamanda Ngozi Adichie

Post 180: The Single Story--TED Talk by Chinamanda Ngozi Adichie

One of the fun ways to teach a class is to supplement that class with videos from Youtube. Youtube has a rich database of videos from teaching French pronunciation to the showing of classic Shakespeare plays. I use Youtube to teach students Shakespeare. I have my students watch the Youtube video of Shakespeare before they read the written version for better reading comprehension for both my ELL and my NS.

In a Cultural Diversity, Multicultural Ed, Bilingual Ed, or Intercultural Communication class, you can find many videos dealing with culture, diversity, stereotypes and cultural identity.  For my Asian American class, I have my students type into the Youtube search engine, Asian American, anger, cultural identity and a lot of videos about angry Asian Americans talking about their cultural identity pop up.

In this TED talk, Chinamanda Ngozi Addichie, gives a talk about the 'single story' and about the dangers of judging a culture, race or ethnic group based on too little information. Addichie has also written many novels about Africa and about Nigerian culture. She is a fascinating read and I highly recommend reading her books.

1) What are the dangers of judging or making opinions on something you know very little about? What are the dangers of  'Single Story' according to Chinamanda?

2) What cultures do you know very little about? Do you judge what you know very little about? Can you make sound judgements or have solid opinions on something or someone you know very little about?

3) As you listen to this video, in what instances has Chinamanda been guilty of basing an opinion on just 'a single story' of that topic?

4) When have you been guilty of judging a person or group based on 'a single story' of that group?

5.) How did Chinamanda define 'single story' in her video? How would you define 'single story'? How does this apply the topic of 'single story' apply to what we are learning in our Intercultural Communication class?
