Post 158: More DQ questions on Being Asian during COVID 19
Andrew Yang said in an op-ed in the Washington Post that we Asian Americans have to step up to prove our "Americanness" Do you agree or disagree with this statement?
When you go to Twitter and type Andrew Yang in the search engine, what reaction are other Asian Americans having to Yang's statement?
Here is exactly what he said, "We Asian Americans need to embrace and show our American-ness in ways we
never have before. We need to step up, help our neighbors, donate gear,
vote, wear red white and blue, volunteer, fund aid organizations, and
do everything in our power to accelerate the end of this crisis. We
should show without a shadow of a doubt that we are Americans who will
do our part for our country in this time of need."
How is this eerily similar to the loyalty oaths in No-No Boy? Should Asian Americans have to prove their American identity? What do you think?
What can be done to curb racism against Asian Americans and others? Do you think more classes like The Asian American Experience are needed? Why and why not?
Andrew Yang also says that for the first time, he is ashamed of being Asian. Can what others think about you or treat you affect your sense of cultural identity? If you feel like a winner, you act like a winner and if you feel like a loser, you act like a loser, is this a valid statement? Why or why not?
If you saw an Asian American being racially harassed in the street for being 'a virus', what would you do? Would you step in to help? or would you call the police? (There is no right or wrong answer to this question)
If you are Asian American, how has COVID19 affected your life? Have you been harassed by others blaming you for the virus? Do you feel safe buying groceries or taking your dog out for a walk? Do you feel safe sneezing or coughing in public? Do you feel safe wearing a mask in public?
According to this Lisa Ling Town Hall with Andrew Yang, how has Andrew Yang and Lisa Ling's life been affected by COVID19? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ePErK4ZQUXY
Should Asian Americans have to 'prove' they are American? Why do you think Andrew Yang is getting backlash from Japanese Americans?
