Post 263: How do I get students to come to my Live Chats?
How many of you have hosted office hours only to have nobody show up? You grade your papers. You anxiously check the Live Chat Room to see if anybody has shown up. Minutes go by. And nobody shows. You worked hard on your presentation for no audience. Feel discouraged?
I am not going to say I have the answer. My teaching colleague said that he made it part of his students' participation grade so they had to show up at his Live Chats to get a good grade. Then, my colleague said, he would get an audience for his Live Chats.
What about if you want your students to come voluntarily?
1. I have tried a more conversational tone.
2. I use multimedia graphics.
3. I tell students I can answer their questions in real time. No need to wait until I wake up the next morning to answer their emails!
And I am able to get a small dedicated group to come. Usually it is the same group that shows up week after week too! Because they show up, they end up with better grades than students who don't show up to the Live Chats.
