Advantages of Peer Review
Fosters teamwork
The Advantages of Peer Review is that students get to work collaboratively and develop team spirit as they work together to correct each other's papers.
Reinforce Writing Skills
They reinforce their knowledge of essay structure and grammar rules as they spot essay structure weaknesses and grammar errors in each other's papers.
Bond better with Peers
They are able to relate to each other as peers without the fear and anxiety of having to impress the teacher.
Construct their own knowledge
As students learn essay structure and grammar rules by interacting with each other, they construct their own knowledge in a learner centered classroom.
Key component of a Learner Centered Classroom
Peer Review is a key component in a student centered learner centered classroom where the teacher is the guide on the side and students develop confidence in their writing skills.
Disadvantages of Peer Review
Prefer Teacher Feedback and ExpertiseStudents complain that other students do not have the same expertise as the teacher in terms of feedback on grammar rules and essay structure. Students still want teacher feedback to make sure their final draft is correct so they can get a good grade.
Want Teacher feedback for better grade
Students value teacher feedback over student feedback with some students ignoring the peer feedback altogether. Since teachers are the one giving the grade, then the teachers should be the ones giving the feedback.
The advantages outweigh the disadvantages so in my book, peer review is a great way for students to collaborate together whether you are teaching online or face to face.
