Post 478: When do I mute or unmute myself during a Zoom session?

When do I mute or unmute myself during a Zoom session?

Today, I was on a faculty Zoom meeting. Apparently, I forgot to turn off my cell phone before the Zoom meeting. So, just as I  had unmuted myself to introduce myself as new faculty, lo and behold, my cell phone rings at that very minute. Of course, I quickly took the call while my bosses and the rest off the faculty looked on. As a result, the boss quickly muted me. I had to wait for another opportunity to introduce myself as new faculty. But as a result of the phone ringing just as I turned off the mute button, I did not look good in front of the faculty--lesson learned--Always remember to turn off your cell phone during a Zoom session. If you do get a call during a Zoom session, then quickly mute yourself and take the call, then when you are done with your call, then you can un mute yourself to participate in the Zoom discussion.

Luckily during that same faculty meeting, somebody's baby cried, somebody's cat meowed, and somebody's dog barked and then another dog next to another Zoom caller barked at that other dog through Zoom--now that was funny! This is the price we pay for working from home :) I guess this is why we will all return to the office when the pandemic is over :)

As a Zoom host, I have had to mute students when a student's baby cried too loud, or when a student is scolding her child to be quiet too loudly that other students cannot hear me lecture my lesson. In this next Bitmoji cartoon, I tell students when to mute or un mute themselves during a Zoom session.

I love using these Bitmoji classrooms because it adds a bit of humor and fun to this serious Zoom etiquette reminder. The fun thing about Bitmoji classrooms is that they take the sting and boredom out of these housekeeping student reminders.

Post 477: Preparing my class for their Week 11 Peer Review Forum in 4 weeks

Post 477: Preparing my Writing Class for their Week 11 Peer Review Forum in 4 weeks

Currently, I teach a 12 week writing class for my nursing students.  Right now, my class is doing their Week 7 Forum where they are posting their topics for their Essay 2, Comparison Contrast Essay, which will be their last essay in this class. While I am participating in this forum for this week, I am also busy setting up my classroom for the Week 11 Peer Review forum by adding extra tips for students on how to conduct a Peer Review. In the Week 11 Peer Review forum, I added this fun out of this world tip for my students:

Despite the fact my students are adult working nursing students and that Bitmoji classrooms were originally intended for teaching kids during this pandemic year, I have had great success using Bitmoji classrooms to brighten up my online classrooms. My adult students tell me that these Bitmoji classrooms really brighten up their day after a hard day working at a hospital or a clinic, and these classrooms bring a smile to my adult nursing students' faces. After all, why should kids have all the fun right? In addition, I find it fun making these classrooms to express my social presence and fun teaching personality. As a result of these colorful and fun classrooms, my students tell me that my English class is their favorite class at Fortis College.

Post 476: Using Bitmoji PPT Presentations To Spice Up Canvas Modules

Post 481: Using Bitmoji Google Slies PPT To Spice Up Canvas Modules

Every Canvas classroom comes with standardized modules that every teacher can fill in. Embedded in every classroom syllabus every other week is a module called 'Instructor Session' where I fill in the details of my Zoom Live Lecture for that week. Normally, I fill in the date and time of my Zoom session, and I put in the topics of my Zoom session as well as the Zoom link.  For this Zoom Instructor Session Module, I decided to give students a taste of that week's topic is how to use CAPOW to find credible sources. I decided to embed a Google Bitmoji PPT to spice up this Canvas Module.

Post 475:Fun Fanciful Bitmoji Cartoons Brigthen up the Canvas Home Page

Fanciful Bitmoji classrooms are also fun. I love that fanciful Bitmoji classrooms are very colorful and light up the Canvas home page. It definitely wakes up the sleepy student who is turning in his papers late,or who has had a very busy day and needs a pick me up! What a better fun way to give students reminders than fanciful Bitmoji cartoons like the one below! I also have fun making them too!
